The Middle Cushion Is a Throne, and No One Will Sit in It
Every living room has a throne, and every guest avoids it.
People fight for the ends of the couch. They want the armrest the way kingdoms want ports. I understand. I have weighed the armrest and found it wanting.
From the middle cushion, the whole room is yours. Both side tables are within reach. Both remotes answer to you. You can address either end of the couch without turning your head, which makes you the only person in the room who is truly in the conversation. The ends are seats. The middle is a position.
The objection is always the same: the middle has no armrest. Consider what an armrest actually is. It is a place to put a drink you will knock over at the exact moment you have finally relaxed.
I do not ask you to agree with me. The geometry agrees with me, and geometry does not need your permission.
Next week: the recliner, which is not furniture so much as a decision.
